Warning to Oxfordshire Dog Owners

Please note that a large number of unqualified dog 'trainers' and 'behaviourists' are operating in the Oxford area and in Oxfordshire.

At OABC, we are seeing an alarming number of clients who have had the misfortune of passing through their hands first, wasting their money on unsound, unscientific and in some cases dangerous advice. Some of the owners that end up seeking help from us are literally traumatised, and some of the dogs are emotional wrecks by the time they get to us.

Some of the 'trainers' that have come to our attention use outdated, inappropriate, aversive (rough) and in some cases abusive methods, while many of the so-called 'behaviourists' give out wrong and deleterious advice, and do not have required knowledge nor the skills to deal with complex issues.

Please see the Welfare in Dog Training website for more information on harmful versus safe methods in dog training.

Please do not engage the services of trainers/behaviourists who:

Tell you that you have 'to be the pack leader', 'dominate' your dog and who promote scientifically unsound Dog Whisperer style methods.

Berate you and/or your dog.

Blame you for all your dog's problems.

Shout at you and/or your dog.

Appear to have no patience.

Use choke collars/chains.

Use any kind of coercion and/or inflict pain on your dog (for example, tie leads and ropes around your dog to refrain it from pulling while teaching you to shout at it; or tying ropes around its back legs and lifting it off the ground when it shows aggression towards other dogs). These methods are not dog training nor behaviour rehabilitation, they are ABUSE and have no place in the 21st Century.

I implore Oxfordshire dog owners, particularly those in the Oxford area, to please check individual credentials and which methods are used thoroughly, before engaging the services of a dog trainer or behaviourist.

Dr Muriel Brasseur BSC (Hons) PhD, Full Member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (International). Member of the Kennel Club Accredited Instructor scheme working towards accreditation.

Oxfordshire Animal Behaviour Centre is fund-raising to open a canine rehabilitation unit.

The centre will operate in conjunction with the existing busy and expanding animal behaviour practice, and will incorporate an affiliated dog training school.

Its main aim will be to provide a safe space to treat some of the more problematic behaviours that cannot be fully resolved in the home environment of our clients.

To find out more about our aims for the centre click here...

ANIMANIA Petcast: The Justin Hawkins Interview

Justin Hawkins, songwriter, lead singer and guitarist of glam rock band The Darkness really needs no introduction. The Darkness found worlwide success with their first album 'Permission to Land' in 2003, and Justin became well-known for possessing the finest soaring falsetto in British rock, as well as for his energetic theatrical onstage performances often involving catsuits. Multi-talented, he also produces, writes songs for other artists, and has recently spent some time on a couple of other projects. Their hiatus now over, The Darkness are back and will be touring the UK starting this month and will be releasing a new album in 2012. Yay.

Perhaps not so well known is the fact that Justin is a massive animal lover. He also happens to be an all round nice person. He lives with his equally animal-mad and lovely girlfriend, Helena, and their two dogs, Buddy the long-haired Chihuahua and Bonnie, a Griffon Bruxellois, as well as a Bengal cat called Cully and a tail-less rescue cat called Smellbear.

Listen to Justin musing with Muriel about dogs, cats, animals and shucks HERE

Below: Justin and his girlfriend Helena with their prize-winning pooches Buddy and Bonnie

A message from Beverley Cuddy from Dogs Today Magazine

Don't just get mad... stop it ever happening again

You must have heard about the two police dogs who died in a car. It made everyone livid. Rather than just waste all that energy we decided to do something positive and launch a campaign to make people realise cars very quickly become coffins and that it cooks dogs - a ghastly way to die!

We want zero tolerance of dogs being left in hot cars.

Please help with this campaign by ordering some FREE stickers, posters, support with a blog/web button that links to our campaign blog here
